Recipe: Sweet Potato, Quinoa & Kale Baby Led Weaning Patties

My husband brought home a bag of kale instead of spinach the other day, so I was inspired to use it to create these sweet potato, quinoa and kale baby led weaning patties or burgers. Totally vegetarian and super healthy for baby – they’ll be a big hit with the whole family!

Why use kale in a baby led weaning recipe?

Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet and I am shocked it’s taking me this long to post a recipe on my blog using this incredible ingredient. Kale contains so many healthy nutrients for your baby including:

  • Vitamin A – helps the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs work properly
  • Vitamin C – necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues
  • Calcium – needed to build strong and healthy bones
  • Vitamin K – required to help wound recovery
  • Lutein – important for eye health

What are the benefits of sweet potato for your baby?

Sweet potatoes are one of my FAVOURITE ingredients to use in baby led weaning recipes, simply because they’re so versatile! They also have huge health benefits for your baby including:

  • Rich in vitamin C
  • They contain tons of vitamin B6
  • A good source of potassium and magnesium
  • Great for heart and brain health
  • Amazing fuel source for energy

Is quinoa good for your baby?

Quinoa is one of the healthiest and nutrient dense foods on the planet. If it’s good enough for us adults, then it’s definitely great for your baby!

Quinoa contains:

  • Protein – essential for growth and repair
  • Fiber – aids digestion
  • Manganese – builds bone and essential for healthy cell growth
  • Magnesium – crucial for good health and development
  • Phosphorus – helps keep bones and teeth strong
  • Folate – essential for the formation of healthy red blood cells
  • Copper – helps with brain development
  • Zinc – important for a healthy immune system
  • Potassium – helps regulate fluids within the body

I think it’s pretty safe to say that quinoa ticks all the boxes when it comes to being a delicious and nutritious food you should definitely be feeding your baby!

Can you replace the egg in this sweet potato, quinoa & kale baby led weaning recipe?

Egg can be replaced with a flax egg which is a simple way of binding the ingredients together without using eggs.

Simply mix one tablespoon of ground flax seed with 2.5 tablespoon of water until a consistency similar to that of raw egg white is formed. Add it to the mixture and voila!

For this recipe, you’ll need 2 tablespoons of ground flax and 5 tablespoons of water.

How do you serve these sweet potato, quinoa & kale baby led weaning patties?

For my toddler, I simply cut these patties into thirds and let him dig in with his fork. For younger babies, you can cut them into strips so they can be easily held by little hands or for older children you can place them instead wraps, pittas or buns to create yummy little burgers.

Always ensure that the patties are sufficiently cooled before giving them to your baby or toddler.
